Corporate Workshops
The workshops below are general outlines, meant to be tailored to your team’s individual interests, passions, needs, size and timeline.
Writing for Non-Writers: Business Speak that Makes Sense
Raise your hand if you’ve ever received an email that was supposed to clarify things but left you more confused? Or gotten something so full of mistakes you were embarrassed for the other person? Or even worse, written something yourself that you failed to proofread or even really think about, and when you went back to it later the best emoji to convey your reaction is the one of the person smacking their face. We write all day long, and while what we write isn’t necessarily going to be up for any literary awards, it does have to follow some basic rules: clarity, concision, connection. In this workshop, you’ll learn some foundational principles about writing, as well as some tricks to help make sure that things read well and make sense. But we’ll also discuss when it’s more appropriate to not email but to actually get on the phone or, when relevant, go see the people in person. Good communication starts with knowing what medium to communicate in, whether that’s email, white paper, sliding into someone’s DMs, or texting. You might want to write that down.
Writing for Non-Writers: Thought Leadership People Will Actually Read
You know how it is: you’re scrolling through LinkedIn, and it seems like everyone you know has just published something about insights or data or trends or...fill in the blank, according to your industry. And while these articles probably contain some good stuff that might help you in the work you do every day, you can’t bring yourself to click because the language is awkward and cumbersome, and there’s nothing to do distinguish it from the last piece to come through your feed. Here’s the thing: thought leadership doesn’t have to try so hard. It doesn’t have to sound as smart as you think it does. The most engaging thought leadership feels like a conversation. You’re sharing your thoughts with your reader and giving them space to respond. You’re asking questions that someone might actually want to answer. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to trust your internal voice. You’ll practice keeping it simple. And you’ll leave with the confidence to write the way you want to write, an authentic style that will enable your brilliant ideas to shine through.
Writing for Non-Writers: Presentations that Won’t Bore the S**t Out of People
If there’s one thing I learned in the corporate world, it’s that some people give presentations well, and some people do not. Which is a travesty, because every sales pitch is about story, and everyone can learn to tell a story simply and easily, in a voice that comes naturally to them. And yet I can’t count how 100-slide presentations I’ve sat through, all while editing the slides in my head. Getting people to invest in you—financially or otherwise—requires two things: inspiring them and doing it quickly. In this workshop, which can be customized to your team’s needs, we’ll learn how to get to the point and how to do it in a way that keeps your audience awake and engaged, instead of sitting in silent judgment or furiously texting their best office buddy about how little they want to be there.
